Almost 250 people turned out for the 2009 South East Area awards ball at the High Rocks, Tunbridge Wells on Saturday May 30th.

Guest of honour Nick Gifford, the Findon trainer, distributed the awards alongside master of ceremonies and area commentator David Rhys-Jones. The most coveted awards went to Cynthia Haydon (leading lady rider) and Peter Bull (leading gentleman), while the most prestigious was reserved for retiring official starter Howard Jarvis, who received the Hugh Freeland Trophy for the most outstanding contribution to the sport. Less formally, Howard was honoured by all the riders present with a selection of gifts carefully chosen to reflect his principal interests. These included a picture of himself and a generous selection of fine wines. Howard's thankyou speech brought the house down and showed how much he will be missed.

The leading owner was Simon Tindall and the Supporters' Club Ten-To-Follow was won by Mark Siggers.

A strong contingent of pony racers was led by runaway 2009 champion George Crate.

Suzy Bull and Cynthia Haydon have organised the prizegiving for the last few seasons and it has alternated between garden parties, marquee soirees and the latest function, which was a catered black tie affair. Judging by the attendance - the highest for a long time - the SE Area has an appetite for dressing up. This was a memorable night and hopefully the format will be repeated in future seasons.
